Anyone using a GN intercooler

Is anyone using, or has thought about using a Grand National air/air stock intercooler with their Vortech supercharger? I am about to buy a Vortech sysem for my car (92 Z28 350 TPI) and happen to have a stock GN intercooler laying around. Could this be used to get a little more boost and suppress detonation? I am just curious if it would be beneficial or not.

The GN intercooler was a very good design form the factory. On the turbo buicks they are almost as effective as a front mount up to around 20psi of boost. I would also suggest that you get the Duttwieller big necks to replace the stock in and out pipes since they are pretty small (you have to cut the old ones off and weld on the new ones... not too hard to do if you have a MIG welder and are fairly good at welding aluminum).

Yeah, they were good up to a point. I see you are a fellow GN owner too. They are great cars! Mine is running 11.50s@116 with the stock engine and bolt-ons. This is why I have the stock one as I swapped it out for a front mount for 24lbs of boost. I was going to fab it to use with the Vortech set-up, so maybe I could safely run up to about 10 to 12 lbs, on the stock engine.I was just wondering if anyone on here has done something like that. Thanks for the input.

Always good to see a fellow buick owner . I never got to see what the car could do cause the tranny blew up... FWIW many guys who have the exact same setup i have are running mid 11s at 120 so that's where i guess it stands (TA-49, 36# injectors, thrasher chip, stock engine, alky injection and approaching 25psi of boost, other small stuff). Saw a couple of people dyno near 400rwhp with the TA49 pushing 25psi so that makes me feel pretty good about the car. I was starting to play with the alky injection and turning up the boost... got to the low 20s on a few runs and the trans started that no-shift crap at WOT. The difference between 17psi and 22psi with the ta49 and alky is wicked. Needless to say it would blow away my Z28. What sucks is that there were a few modded LS1s and mustangs around here, some on nitrous, i wanted to teach a lesson . If only.....

With the room the 3rd gens have you shouldn't have a problem. Any kind of charge air cooling, be it by a cooler or a chemical such as alchohol, will do nothing but help. You might loose a pound of boost or two, but the cooler charge will more than make up for that. Doing the duttweiller necks would also allow you to mount the necks at the best angle for the hoses to hook to. HTHs

i looked into this a while back. do a search. i was going to run it with a s trim with custom piping. i believe what most suggested was changing the necks to a bigger size. shoudl work fine up to about 8-9 psi.
