Projector

Looking to convert my living room to a front projector.

Has to be 1080, dont care about 3D. Obviously I want it to be bright since it is not a totally sealed off room.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Also, need a screen (obviously)

Re: Projector

There are a lot of factors to consider.

What is your budget?
What will the projector be used for? Sports, movies?
Do you need a lot of placement flexibility?
Have you seen a lot of DLPs and know if you are impacted by "Rainbow Effect"?

The new projector I just bought (BenQ W6000) first shipped almost 2 years ago. The models that are just coming out now don't offer many more new features or capabilities other then 3D.

Re: Projector

Epson Pro 9700... I've been using them a lot lately and I love it. It's a bit pricey compared to the BenQ, but the picture is worth it.

A nice projector. But it won't be as bright and it is LCD vs DLP. So it won't be as good for watching sports in ambient light but will be much better watching a movie with the lights off.

But if I were to consider the Epson, I would take the Epson 8700ub over the 9700 because it is $1200 cheaper but has 95% of the features. The 8700 is all the same hardware but I think it has a different lenses and some extra image processing gadgetry. This Epson series also tends to go through bulbs quickly which is why they come with a spare lamp.

The new Epsons (3010 and 5010) are impressive also. They are very bright at a good price, but inherently don't have as good blacks.

There are a lot of projectors out there; all have their strengths and weaknesses. It all depends on what attributes matter to you. If all I used my projector for was movies in the pitch dark, I would have went with one of the JCV LCOS units. But I settled on one that with the balance of attributes I wanted for my application.

Re: Projector

General use. I have a 46" LCD in my other living area, and a 50inch LCD in my bedroom. Was going to buy a 60", but thought I should do something different in there.

I would LIKE to spend around $1k, but if I need to spend more to get something I will enjoy I dont want to buy twice.
dont know about rainbow effect, but I have watched DLP rear projection TVs with out issue
Placement doesnt matter. WOULD LOVE to sink it into my back wall, 20ft away if possible
Only sport I watch is F1.

Re: Projector

This was the last nicest setup I got to work with.

This was the last setup I got to, not nearly as hightech but still cool, and dead ***** reliable(when everything is timed right)
