Is barium sulfate supposed to give you an ungodly amount of gas?

Just curious. I got my CT scan done this morning and ever since I've been ripping them almost nonstop. They also tricked me, told me I needed to just drink the two 16oz things before I got there. Then they made me drink another one and a half after I got there. That stuff is nasty and has an almost gel like consistency.

Barium sulfate may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

* stomach cramps
* diarrhea
* nausea
* vomiting
* constipation
* weakness
* pale skin
* sweating
* ringing in the ears

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms tell the staff at the testing center or call your doctor immediately:

* hives
* itching
* red skin
* swelling or tightening of the throat
* difficulty breathing or swallowing
* hoarseness
* agitation
* confusion
* fast heartbeat
* bluish skin color

Barium sulfate may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking or after receiving this medication.

If you experience a serious side effect, you or your doctor may send a report to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online [at http://www.fda.gov/MedWatch/index.html] or by phone [1-800-332-1088].
So yes, I think so.

What did they scan your for again? I got a scan a while back where I think I had to drink something like that but it was for a scan of my upper digestive tract.

Don't remember any farting except for yesterday when I had spaghetti for breakfast, oh man that was bad news all morning.

They think I might have a blockage in my intestines. I've had a pain on my right side for a couple months and alot of difficulty with #2(no, not that #2, the other #2).

Man I feel like they pumped me full of air.

Well, I think stomach cramps and diarrhea translate to bad gas.

I have had alot, I was doing 4 CTs a year, and in '05 had like 6-7.

because of my cancer I am at a higher risk of cancer by the number of catscans I have had

As for the barium... it had given me some farts, alot of people have problems, I have an iron stomach, but it did give me some crazy watery white ****s....

Likely the gas was building up in your intestines and was pushed out by the heavy/think barium sulfate. Your body can't absorb barium so it just gets pushed out like a HUGE amount of fiber.
