New times for the Datsun:)
My bro and i took his 408ci SBC 1979 Datsun 280ZX to the Dunn-Benson dragstip tonite for a few passes.
Let me first say that if you haven't been to this track yet this year, ya ought to try it. It has been repaved and hooks every bit as well as Fayettenam. Well, it does in the right lane.
Anywhoo, some of you may recall that last time out (at Rockingham) this car ran a best of 12.49 with an 8.12 in the eighth mile and a 2.07 short time. It hit a best mph of 114.79 in the quarter, and a best of 91 mph in the eighth. We cursed Rockingham's slick surface and vowed to do better elsewhere.
Tonight, the car ran a 7.76 at 92.62 on the first pass right off the trailer. That was backed up about 2 minutes later with a 7.69. Short times were decent: in the mid to high 1.8s.
I, however thought there was a good bit more in the car as my bro tossed me the keys. My first pass of the night in the car netted a 7.67 at 93.69 mph with a 1.93 short. My second pass was what I had been looking for: A 1.76 short, 4.898 330', and a 7.529 at 93.24 mph!
I was pretty stoked after this one, so I parked the car and let it cool down for a while.
My bro fired the car back up after a half hour or so and made his way to the staging lanes. This pass worked out to a 7.69 at 91 and change, and we decided to let it cool for another spell.
After about another 45 minutes or so, I fired the car up and got into the growing lines in the staging lanes. I pushed the car all the way up to let it cool a little more. When the time came, I picked the right lane, spun the tires over a couple of times, and staged shallow. The launch on this pass felt decent, and i tagged the rev limiter ever so beifly on the 1-2 shift. When the scoreboard lit up, I could barely beleive my eyes: 7.494 at 94.552 mph...with a 1.800 short time! WooHOO!!
Though the car wouldn't break 7.50 for the rest of the night, it hit 94 mph on two more passes.
The last pass of the night was a grudge race of sorts against a ratty looking (but stout sounding) third gen firebird whose owner ran his mouth. I took the left lane for once on this pass. Result: lots of wheelspin, 2.11 short, and 8.12 at 93 mph. Oh, and a seriously cooked firebird that managed to click off an 8.5 at 83.
Next time this car sees a decent 1/4 mile track, I would wager that solid 11s are definitely in the cards
Later,
D.
