Whining Problems 4l60e

Cars in my sig. Rebuilt trans back in '03 with the beast, alto wide band, 65e planetarys, corvette servo, stock shift plate, 7 clutches and steels for all gears, and a 2500 stall TCI converter.

A couple of months ago, I was at Atco in NJ. First couple of passes went well. the 3rd pass mot so much. Right at the top end of 2nd gear at 6k rpms during the 2-3 shift the car went kaboom!! Im pretty sure the cause of the boom was to msd coil dying in magnificent fashion causing a serious detonation. Well At that time the rpms dropped to idle(800 or so rpms), oil pressure dropped to nothing, when hitting the gas pedal, the motor did not react at all and was stumbling. Shut it off and coasted to safety. Checked under the hood, Couldnt see anything that stood out. After 5 mins, I fired back up and everything was fine again. I could rev it normally and the oil pressure came back up like normal.

Drove it home babying it only bout 20 miles. And now have been driving it on the weekends with no problems what so ever. The trans still shifts when and how it is set up to do. no slippage or anything. The only problem that I have had since the kaboom is when the trans is in DRIVE or REVERSE, it makes a whining noise. Both when cold and hot. Does not make this noise when in Park or Neutral. I personally have no idea where to begin tracking this down. The fluid and filter were replaced 3 months ago, maybe 3000 miles. The fluid is still perfect. Nice and pink and no burnt or material in it. The whining is def coming from the trans. I got underneath it while it running and had someone cycle slow through P, R, N, D, and 2.

Does any of the resident experts or sponsors have any idea what this might be? Do you think the pump might have cracked internally or at all when the kaboom hit? I am at a total lose.

As I stated above, I have Zero driveability issues. I can still light up the tires and take it up to 5500 rpms with it still shifting properly with no slippage. Dont wanna take it any higher til i have this prob figured out. Oh and the trans has a total of about 30k miles on it since the rebuild from '03.

Most likely a bearing whine. Does the noise ever go away in any gear?

Sorry Frank for not replying sooner. The noise never goes away while in Drive or Reverse. There is no noise in Park or Neutral.

But I was under my car on monday replacing my driveshaft, and I reached up to get the yoke meshed with the output shaft and I could wiggle the shaft in all directions about 1/16th of a inch.

So what I am thinking is, when the car is in drive or reverse and has the driveshaft torqued, the output shaft is at a slight angle putting pressure on something inside the trans, thus causing the whine.

I could be completely wrong about that one, but it sounds logical to me.

Is it worth taking the tail off the tranny and look up in there to see if anything is broke? Would I be able to see anything?

They all have movement in the tail shaft. The bushing in the tailhousing keeps the yoke centered.

This is a video of the noise coming from the tranny. Sorry for the crappy sound quality. Took the video on my cell phone.

Sounds like a bearing in the converter. They will whine when you put a load on it.

Re: Whining Problems 4l60e

Ok. That would make sense to me. Because it still shifts when its supposed to and it still hits hard like it always has.

Now obviously a bearing going is something to worry about, but is it going to hurt anything internally in the trans itself.(I check the condition of the fluid daily and its still nice and pink). Do you think I should replace the converter asap or could I get away with it for a while.

Guess Im not buying rims this tax season. :(

Re: Whining Problems 4l60e

If the bearing is making npoise, there's a chance it can fail completely. If that happens, it will shed the needles through the transmission pump, and destroy it.

Just to update this thread if anyone else wants to know what fixed my problem. It was the torque converter. I just put in a stocker this past weekend and no more whining issues. There was little to no play in the old converter snout. Looks like I will be sending this one out to be rebuilt and possibly restalled. YEY!!

Yea defiantly. Thanks for your input on the matter. Know any converter rebuilders in the mid atlantic area?

Re: Whining Problems 4l60e

What kind of converter is it? We get all of our converters from Protorque, which is in Bohemia New York (Long Island). We also use a converter shop here in Newark, Delaware for all of our cut and cleans. If yours is nothing special, it may be cheaper to just replace it. If it's a known brand, that company may work with you on fixing it.

No doubt. The problem is lack of funds. Or else Id get a yank or something alone those lines. I just dont have $500 plus to drop. Ive seen some good ones in the classifieds, but have to save up.
