What's your pinion depth and backlash set at?

Hey guys,

I'm curious, my rear end has been making some noises, slight whine, and the here and there gear slap/clunk. My gear oil was changed less than a year ago, and I did use the limited slip additive. My dad had mentioned having my gears too tight could result in worse track times too. So, my question is, what is your backlash and pinion depth set at? I have 3:73's in my 10 bolt, and when we set them up originally, i believe we set the backlash between .006-.010, accordingly to what my haynes manual said. Is this what you guys have done? I'm going to check it again to be sure before I reset it, but I just wanted to see what you guys have set it at in the past.

And, in the midst of searching for previous topics, I read that someone said the backlash on Richmond gears is stamped on the ring gear....is this true??

yes, it is on most of the gears. That number is just a starting point though, make sure you go by the pattern.

What do you mean by 'pattern?' My father and I originally set these gears up before about 4 years ago. I haven't had a major problems so far. Other than the fact that they may be a little tight - and on harder turns its starting to squeal louder.

Wasn't there something about the c-clips that caused that chirp or something too??

Set mine @ .005. Still breaking it in however and I know it'll go up a little over time. My 3.23's that I took out w/ over 60K had .004 of backlash! Talk about tight even after 10 yrs of abuse.

Wow that is pretty tight. I set my Strange 4.10s to .009". Their spec called for .008-.012 and I was shooting for .008, but got a .009" and called it good. I set my pinion depth to be the same as stock, and set the preload using a solid pinion spacer.

What do you mean by pre-load? I understand the other things, but pre-load I've never heard of. Thanks for the replies guys.
