BIG TIME tranny problems...

Well, I just burned through my third tranny. The last one lasted 2600 miles, and this one lasted 1700. I need to figure out what is blowing them. I figured the guy rebuilt it wrong the first time, so I had him rebuild it again (for free), but then it went again 1700 miles later. I checked the tranny fluid regularly, and didn't beat on it. I baby my car, so it didn't blow from abuse...Every time I have it rebuilt, I lose third and fourth, and the clutch packs are completely worn down...Theres a lot I can explain, but it would take me a couple of days to write it all...Lets see, I figured the tranny was going to go this time, becuase it whinned a little when it shifted (when I got on it a little), and it just seemed to feel different when I was going down the road...Whenever I put it to the floor, it hits the rev limiter until you let off, so I figured the previous owner played with the shift points, but when I took it to my local dealer, they said "you can't play with anything in that ecm", but I thought you could...Then I also thought there might be a problem the trannies valve body, or maybe the third and fourth selonoid (I don't know how to spell that) might not be working right...I can't think of anything else that could keep blowing my trannies...I also thought of just buying a different 4l60e, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to, or if it won't fix it...So I might just sell the car...But I REALLY don't want to. If you guys have any tips or advice, let me know.

I would find someone else to rebuild your tranny. Sounds like that guy doesn't know what he is doing

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

I've talked to a couple of people about him, and they all recommend him. I've also had the tranny specialist at one of the bigger dealers around here rebuild it too (well, that was with my old camaro, so it's a different tranny). He said he'll honor his work and rebuild it again (and he pays for parts and labor)...I just think there is something else causing the tranny problems. Oh, I also forgot to say that when I bought the car, the previous owner had just rebuilt the tranny...But I didn't think too much of it.

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

i just had a similar experience with my tranny! there was no warning though. the first time i was driving normal and then i hit the gas about 3/4 throttle and it hit the rev limiter and slammed into gear and hauled ***( felt like a 5500 stall) and i was going like 40 so i was at the bottom of 2nd. then later night after taking it to this guy and telling him what happened earlier, he didnt have a clue. then after leaving his house same thing again but it came unexpected and i didnt let off the gas quick enuff and blew the servo out the side of the tranny( tranny guy said that he had never seen this b4) adn my car only had 50,000 miles at that time and it is the 2nd tranny in it. and i am kinda worried that this one might go as well. i really wish there was an explanation for it.
at one point i was thinking it was the tps giving the comp wrong readings but i dont know. later and hope someone here knows

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

Ok well about a year ago i was where you two were. My tranny was slipping so i had a well recommended guy rebuild it for me. I pulled it out and took it to him.

He rebuilt it once and was great, i babied it for a long time then hit it and it was great. Then it happened, just bit it. To make a long story short i literly took my transmission and installed it 5 times.
You guys should check your programming. I narrowed it down and i think it was my HPP3 had my trans lines at high pressure and just was too much eventuly. Second time no clue.. posiibly the same problem. Third time i turned it back to stock but i guess the trans was overfilled and seals overexpanded and broke. Fourth time tiny hole in a seal that wasn't noticed before..... yeah. Fifth time and it's still in there, funny thing is that 5th time i took it to a new guy, at a random trans shop. I spent probably around 2-3 grand total on this whole damn thing, i hate transmissions.

Oh and i'm 19, bought my car when i was 16 and i've paid every penny of it and every penny of that god forsaken transmission

On the plus size i can remove a 4L60E in 31 mins and install it in 29

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

That is exactly what my car is doing...If you put it in third or fourth, it feels like I have a 4000 stall in it, and it just throws you back in the seat, but it's still in second (going 60 mph w/ 4500 rpms or so)....Nobody has been able to give me even a clue on what might be causing this...I kept figuring it was electrical, but I also can't find out how to reprogram my ecm to factory settings...Can that be done without buying a hypertech III? One of my friends is a master mechanic for audi (but the shop is also a chevy dealer), so he said he could get me the GM Tech II, but that's just a scan tool, it won't reprogram it. And that's the only tool he says they have.

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

It sounds to me like the 2nd gear servo piston checkball is stuck in the case.I had this same problem on a buddy of mines car.I know it sounds weird that the 2nd gear servo would cause a problem but what happens is when the checkball gets stuck it does not release the 2nd gear drum which overrides the 3/4.3/4 is still applied without you being able to notice and smokes 3/4 quick. It may not stick all the time thats why you may get a little miles out of it.If you take it back to him tell him to pop the servo out and check the checkball thats in the case. This can easilly be overlooked, trust me I had to pull my buddys tranny about 4 or 5 times till I found it.There is a update for this to eliminate it.I'm not trying to act like a know it all but we own a tranny shop so this is what I do.
Good luck bro,
JE

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

First, do not eliminate the checkball capsule. If it is stuck and cannot be freed easily, then replace it with another one. The transmission builders needs to solve the 3-4 problem, or you will keep doing this. Go to http://pro-built.net/index.cfm?fusea...categoryid=144 this will improve the chances. I would add the "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift Kit to help solve this http://pro-built.net/index.cfm?fusea...t&productid=91 this is the "modified" kit.

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

So, are you saying that I just need to buy new 3rd and 4th clutch packs, rather than a whole new overhaul?
