What to look for when pulling diff cover?

What would I look for as problem areas after pulling the rear-end cover? I ask because my rear end has what I would consider a lot of play in various places. First off with the caliper off I could push/pull each axle in and out about an inch and a half but no up/down movement. Also I could rotate the axle about the same amount even with the other tire on the ground. And I get various clunking that fell like it could be originating from the rear... Or it could be paranoia... Either way the rear has tons of slop.

well i would say that a inch and a half is a bit too much.. mostly you really can't find much in there.. Make sure that key is in between the LSD .. thats what keeps the axles from going and and possibly dropping a c clip.. make sure you dont have too much metal on the magnet and other things that look suspicious... most of that play when turning the wheel is in the mesh between the pinion and the ring gear.. its normal.. to a certain extent anyway..
