What the crap is wrong with my tranny?
What the crap is wrong with my tranny?
Ok, this will take awhile to explain, but I REALLY need help with it. Ok, I've blown four trannies (no I don't beat on them, I'm actually a pretty mild driver, especially after I blew my second and third trannies), and I need to figure out why I keep breaking them....I was on my fourth tranny (the one that I just lost a couple of weeks ago), and I can't afford to keep rebuilding them, so I broke it in for 1500 miles, rather than the recommended 500. 700 miles later, I was cruising out of town, going about 45 mpg, when it just popped out of fourth gear, and started to "free rev." I got pretty pissed, put it in second gear, and drove it back to my friends house, which was a couple of miles away. Well, it acted up for awhile (I took it home, like 10 miles, and it didn't stop free revving in third gear, I'll explain fourth in a minute), so I started driving my winter car around ('94 ford explorer). A couple of days ago, I missed my car, so I drove it into town in second gear (took back roads and went about 35 mph in second gear). Well, in town I accidentally put it in "D" (drive) rather than 2nd, and it shifted through all four gears. I was SO suprised, and then I went out and bought 3 bottles of transmedic and put them in, just in case it would help. The next day I changed the filter (pretty dirty), and changed the atf (burnt to a crisp). I took it out for a ride, and it worked fine for about 20 miles, then started to free rev again...And, this is what it does, when I put it in second, it works fine. When I put it in third, it pretty much free revs (it'll free rev, but have VERY little power, not even enough to keep it at 40 mph), then, when I put it in fourth, it's like I have a stall converter. If you let off on the gas, it'll drop to about 1000 rpm's, and then if you hit the gas, it free revs to about 3500 rpm's, and then throws you back in the seat (but it acts like it is in second, because it's rapped out at like 4000 rpm's at like 45 or 50 mph). I don't know if I explained that very well, but I hope somebody can help me with this, because I want to fix the major problems before I sell it (college). After about 5 to 10 minutes of driving, the tranny pan was so hot that I couldn't touch it, and I can't figure out why it's so hot. At first I thought the cat might be clogged, and transfering the heat to the tranny pan, but the cat wasn't even THAT hot...Also, when I changed the atf, there was a bolt in the bottom of my tranny pan, but I couldn't find an open bolt hole (I didn't go the actual rebuilding, but I took out the tranny, and put it back in). The tranny pan was also VERY dirty, but it didn't seem to be metal shavings. The guy that rebuilt it for me, told me that it took him two hours to rebuild, and everybody that I talked to said that it should take a minimum of four to six hours to completely rebuild and clean out, so I was thinking maybe this guy did a **** poor rebuild. And, one more thing, the guy who owned the car before me, changed some stuff in the ecm (I don't know how to get it reprogrammed), I think the shift points...Does anybody have any pointers on what could be wrong with my POS car (I'm sick and tired of things going wrong with it)?
