Used gears?

I found some 3.42s for cheap out of a 01 SS with 50K miles. They look good and havent worn unevenly. Think they will be ok in my auto? The question isnt whether I should get new gears or not. The question is do you guy think a set of GM 3.42 gears will be ok in my bolt on car with a stall?

Re: Used gears?

Depends on what series carrier they are and what series you have currently. A4s usually have a 2 series carrier and the 3.42s are probably 3 series.

Re: Used gears?

Used gears quality can only be determined by one thing: Whether or not they were properly installed or not.

I got a used set of 3.73 gears from a company that is actually a sponsor on this board. They said they only had 50 miles on them and were fine. Had them professionally installed. The gear whine at all times from these things was deafening.

My mechanic heard this and said he had a used set of 3.42s he could hook me up with. Said the came out of a manual camaro and they had about 5k miles on them. Put them in, and they were flawless. Ran them in my car since and when I sold the car they were still fine.

Just something to consider. Unfortunately, you can rarely SEE if the gears were installed properly. You won't really know until they are installed. One reason your better off just buying them new. At least you won't have to pay the expensive install price again.

Huh? 3.08 and lower are 2 series. Higher is 3 series. Unless your A4 has the optional 3.23s, it has 2.73s so it would be 2 series.

Re: Used gears?

Like I said both my carrier and the gears I am getting are 3 series carrier. The 3.42s are out of a stock GM 6 speed rear end and my car came stock with 3.23s. The 3.42s i'm looking at were installed in the factory so I am willing to bet they are ok. You see any problems arising from using them when installed properly?
