True transmission temps?

My 95 auto ,I have a tranny cooler and car has 100k on it. The car runs flalessly. My tranny temp guage is hooked up into the acces port on the side of the trans. How accurate is it? Is that reading the actual transmission temp or just the shelltemp? Reason I ask is there is no fluid that comes out when I put the sender in. Its like that on my 95 and friends 02. we have the same set up and on a hot day and drive the guage read 220-240*. All fluids are new, proper level etc.

thats too hot! there is fluid in that port its just not under pressure without the tranny pump turning so all the fluid settles back down into the tranny.

ANYTHING over 200 degrees is WAYYY too hot for normal driving..you need a bigger cooler...did you bypass the factory tranny cooler in the radiator when you put your new one on??? if so, re-route and run them in series...i dunno how your trans has survived at that temp for so long but that is REALLY too high. you will start burning stuff.
