Exclamation Tranny Temperature?

I have a question about our tranny fluid... I know that there is a normal operating temp for whats best for the fluid. At least that's what i've read on this site from a few posts about it...

If your installing an aftermarket cooler is it possible that the system could be running too cool for it to operate right? I'm sure it'll prevent damage when theres a lot of heat being generated but when cruising with the converter locked up.. it seems like the temp could get pretty cool to the point where its below operating range.

Just wanted to open this topic up for discussion

Re: Tranny Temperature?

my trans stays below 160 f and no problems yet, i have a b&m cooler with its own fan and thermo switch and 3/8 lines from the trans to the cooler, i dont route the trans lines through the radiator

Re: Tranny Temperature?

how can I lower my temp? I have mine runnign thru the radiator like I was told. In the mornings going to work I get about 180 but in the heat of the day in traffic and really if I start shifting gears my temp will sky rocket to 210......whats up with that? how are all these people staying at 160 even in traffic? hell I can be idleing and my temp will star to rise...

how can I fix that?

Re: Tranny Temperature?

my feeling on this matter: why run the fluid through a radiator that has 200 f coolant in it , if your trans is able to run at 150-170 f on its own with an external cooler why heat it up running it through a hot radiator,

people have told me im wrong to run my trans with just an external cooler and not route it through the radiator but i know what works and my trans stays below 160 f unless im really stalling out the converter then it will go up a bit till the fan comes on then it goes right back down
(this is with a 10" high stall converter)

im using the b&m cooler with the built in thermo switch and cooling fan, the larger one and i have 3/8" fittings and lines running straight from the trans to the cooler

do you have any pic of your setup i am doing a new rebuild and tranny cooler i have a b&m supercooler and was wanting to get a fan and switch and also run steel braided lines for looks from the tranny to the cooler also where is your cooler? i was thinking about oputting mine in the passenger side splash pannel cut off the flap and pu the fan on to pushing the air out just and idea though

Thanks

Re: Tranny Temperature?

The answer is twofold. I agree with using just the external cooler only, except in very cold areas. The stock type torque converters and loose small diameter torque converters will cause excess heat in idle situations. A cooler with a temperature controlled fan, should be used whenever possible for these situations.

that is exactly where i mounted mine, had to relocate the horns and make a bracket then i cut out some of the splash panel for air to flow and it works perfect, i just installed a 10" west coast converter and it still runs the same temp, that b&m cooler is awsome,
