anyone know how to install an automatic tranny in an lt1? i have no lift. just 2 jacks and a cherry picker.

well when i done mine all i had was car ramps, a jack, and normal hand tools. to make things really easy get really long extensions. i think the ones my dad had were 36 inch to get the top bell bolts, and ohh yeah the most important part another pair of hands. and of course the beer. hope it helps

its for a converter install, but procedure is the same, minus the converter part.
its a great write up done by one of the members on here.

Unless you have a proper tranny jack, then you almost MUST have a second person there to help work the jack, stabilize the tranny while jacking it, etc. Otherwise, they're damn heavy (too much for 1 person to fight with on their own, IMO :shrug: ).

All the "technicals" should have been covered in that write-up posted ... and like someone had already mentioned, a LONG extension (and a swivel socket ;)) are your BEST FRIENDS for doing this job!! :yes: I also have a 36" extension that I've used, but even a 24" will work (anything less ... :no: ). And when you try to put 3 or 4 ~8" extensions together, it starts to look like a limp d!ck, and it's much harder to get in on the bolts with accuracy!! :D

ok, thanks guys. i got the trasmisson on today. i used one jack too!! when i was trying to turn the fly wheel, it was really hard. is it because i have a 383? the one on my 350 was easy to turn. also, the converter didnt spin freely either like it said in the site. did i do something wrong??

If the converter wont spin freely before being bolted to the flex plate, STOP! You may not have it fully seated in the pump and when you start the car you will damage or break the pump. Back up and try again ,

the converter spins.....but i kinda have to muscle it to spin.

so then if it doesnt spin or whatever, what do i have to do? take the transmisson out again and put the converter in again?

I think that's your only option, dude :rolleyes:. The converter shouldn't take much effort at all to spin (disconnected from the engine, of course ;)). If the tabs (for lack of a better term) are not lined up inside, you will have big troubles. An extra ~hour now will save you tons down the road.

i was tring to get the converter off the fly wheel but i cant turn it. i tried really hard to but i couldnt. i could only get one bolt off and the other two are still hidden. also, how can i put on my torque arm on? do i have to slide it on or something?

i was just thinking about this right now.....since the drive shaft is still on the transmission.....is that the reason i might not be able to turn the converter and fly wheel? just wondering.
