Question Top of third with 3.23s, 3.42s, 3.73s

Anyone know what mph is the top of 3rd for each gear ratio?

I have 3.23s, and I need to step up the gear a bit to accompany my heads and cam 383 which is in the works. I've been told I can possibly go with 3.42s, but the final verdict isn't in yet on that. So if that doesn't work, I'll have to go with 3.73s, which is the last resort for me since I prefer to keep the excellent top end performance that I enjoy now with 3.23s. My plans for the car involve more high speed track performance (open road course, for example) and it won't strictly be a drag car like many people go with.

What speed is the top of 3rd gear with each ratio?

How about top speed?

I wouldnt swap them unless you go up to 3.73's. I wouldnt go to any other gear in my car. I've done over 120 mph with plenty of gear to go. I think 4.11/4.10's would be too much, but then again my buddy runs them in his 12 bolt/4L60. Your 383 is going to love the gear. Then again, I'd run a bigger stall too.

Re: Top of third with 3.23s, 3.42s, 3.73s

With the M6 and 3.73s, I hit 115mph in 4th gear at 5700rpm (equal to A4's 3rd gear).

Now with the auto and 3.23s, my car hits about 127 at 5700 in 3rd gear. With the 2.73s, I was at 148mph at 5200rpm (couldn't top the gear out due to lack of nuts to go faster, but it was still pulling). All three of these instances was with the stock 245/50/16 tires.

Just my experience.
