The TH-400 was a 3 speed tranny without overdrive whereas the 4L60-E is a 4 speed with overdrive. The 4L60-E will be much better on the street IMO. The TH-400 is a stronger tranny though, but there are people who can build up the 4L60-E to make it just as strong and you still retain the benefits of having better fuel economy. http://www.cahallperformancetransmissions.com/ Why do you ask, did you damage your current transmission, or are you pushing some very high power numbers?

I personnally would stay with the 4L60E, since its a daily driver.. Plus you can get them built fairly strong...

for a DD yes stay with the 4l60e for driaveability in a th400 at cruising speeds you will be well into the 3000 rpm range now for drag car i am a 400 fan i actually prefer the 350 for most apps though less rotating mass

I'm not up and up on the conversions, but I know it is not something you can pop right in either. If it is a mainly a DD, then I would really consider sticking with the 4L60-E.

You won't like a TH400 in a daily driver.
I have a 94Z with a TH400 in it. Its for racing on the weekends.
I have another 94Z basically stock as a driver.

The swap isn't too hard though, just kinda expensive to buy the parts to make it easier.
