T56 Mileage - Need Advice
T56 Mileage - Need Advice
Alright so here's the story i picked up a lt1 t56 last season from 95 z28 with 350,000km all highway (so in miles 200,000 maybe???) The car was owned by an older gentleman and he drove it as his dd and the maintance records were meticulous. I was going to throw in a rebuild kit but ran low in funds and well im going to be swapping it into my 94 formula in the next month or two. The trans is clean and shifts through all the gears freely. I feel good that its going to run good for me but i just want your opinions or thought that i can check out before i put it in. I relize to know for sure i would have to pull it apart and such but like i said from it being in my garage it shifts through the gears real nice no drag or anything.
What do you guys/gals think?
Matt.

Buy a shifter with adjustable stops (like a Pro 5.0), make sure to adjust them correctly, and keep the power under 500hp, and it'll last a long time.
Without the adjustable stops, the likelihood that you'll break something is considerably higher. The slider keys and 3-4 shift fork tend to be the first to go. A good rebuild will replace both of those with steel instead of aluminum.
350,000 kilometers is about 217,480 miles.

FYI, every rebuild kit sold by SixSpeedsInc (formerly T56Rebuilds) comes with both a steel 3-4 fork and billet slider keys. Did you get your rebuild from them?
i bought a pro 5.0 already funny you mention it but by the sounds of things you say that having a better shifter with adjustable stops will help the life of the trans?

In most cases, a broken slider key or a bent shift fork is something you can just replace. It generally won't frag the rest of the trans, and so I would argue that the trans's life has not ended.
A shifter with adjustable stops will just save you time and money in the long run. Plus, the Pro 5.0 is sweet.
