series 2 series 3

i changed carriers in my 96 T/A from a series 3 to a series 2 carrier with a ring gear spacer to get backlash right and also changed ring gear and pinion (4.10). and it has a high pitched whine noise on the interstate. have already adjusted backlash in and out no change... anybody ever had this problem or crossed this path?? thanx

Your ring-gear backlash should be 6 to 9 thousands (.006-.009) measured with a dial indicator. Additionally, carrier pre-load is an issue and must also be correct. So, what is your ring-gear backlash set at? Gear pattern is first set with pinion gear depth (prior to backlash).

Why on Earth would you swap in a 2-series carrier, with a ring gear spacer?!?!?!?! Wow, that's normally a situation that most people avoid .

Different gear makers give different specs; Richmond says .008" +/- .004" (so anything from .004" - .012"), the Motives I got said .008" - .012" ... with the shims I had, I got the backlash set to .005", and I was happy with that! (I already had the pinion depth set) ... these gears turned out very quiet.

However, I ran a set of Richmond 3.73's a few years ago that WOULD NOT setup right . We had them set around ~.008" (maybe ~.010"?) and they whined. Pulled the backlash down to around ~.006", pinion was perfect, pattern was perfect, and they still whined . Even took the car to a gear shop ... they checked everything and said it was spec on ... they were just a bad set of gears ... it happens.

The Richmond 4.10's I had, setup around ~.012" backlash, were very quiet (only a faint whine under acceleration, but fairly quiet for cruising, and silent on decel).

While correct setup IS important, from my experience, the gears will whine if they want to, no matter how good you set them up. Sometimes they just make "bad batches".

Unfortunately, you may never get rid of it . And since you've run with a spacer, I wouldn't recommend racing that car every weekend or anything!
