Ring Gear question
 

ok, im wanting to up grade my 2.73's to a 3.42 or 3.73. since i have the 2 series carrier, should i buy a 'thick' gear from strange that will let me put a 3.73 with the 2 series carrier? what ecactly is a carrier, and how do you change it to a 3 series?

The carrier is the piece that connect the two axles, and "carries" the ring gear, the ABS reluctor ring and the posi unit.

You used to be able to get "take off" 3-series carriers from SLP for dirt cheap, but I'm not sure if they still have them. A complete new 3-series would get pretty expensive. If you are swapping gears, they have to remove the carrier from the rear axle housing, so replacing the carrier with a new one wouldn't really involve much extra labor over the simple gear swap.

so the carrier is the posi unit itself? i know a guy that owns a speed shop that has some of them out of salvaged camaro's and firebirds. i dont know if he has one out of a 10-bolt. Does this mean if i could find the rear end of another 10-bolt that had a 3 series carrier and pinion it could be swapped with my stock setup?

Hey Eric, I'm looking at doing the same thing myself.

I have a '96Z w/an A4 and I want 3.73's. A very trusted rear-end-guy in town says that he's done a lot of camaros and uses Yukon gears. He told me that they allow you to use a thicker ring gear so you don't need to step up to a 3 series carrier or a new posi. He trusts them so I think I'm going to go for it.

Best part is the price....around $5-600.

Just buy the gearset for a 2-series carrier. No need to replace the carrier IMO:no:.

I agree with what was stated above. Just buy gears for a 2 series carrier. Save the cash for a new carrier and put it towards something else like a 12 bolt :D

GKs96Z28-I have a friend that owns a pretty fast 93 t/a, and yukon is the brand of gear he reccomended so im probably going to go with it since he let me drive the car. big differance between 3.73 and 2.73. the guy that did his install quoted $400 for the gear and the install. i can get Strange Inc. gears in a 2-series carrier alone for just under $200.

Evil, sounds like a good price. The guy I'm going thru is pretty highly recommended and one of the cheapest in town so I think $400 is more than reasonable.
