rear pinion bearings went bad

Has anyone else had their rear pinion bearings go bad ? I only have 45,000 mi on my car & the rear started making lots of noise so i took it to the shop today & was told it was the rear pinion bearings. It's gonna cost around $ 525 to have the car repaired. I've driven cars up to over 150,000 & never had this problem before so I'm trying to find out if it's a common problem.
