Lightbulb Rear end gears nitrided or cryo'd a good idea? ---

I hear of the 4.10's busting teeth. If you sent out , say your MOTIVE 4.10 ring and pinon set to get "hardened" ... by cryo or by being nitrided like people do with cranks ... would it help?

What do you think the cost would be? Thanks ---

4.10 rear end gears have an even tooth count on the pinion gear (10), which is not as strong as an odd tooth count on the pinion gear. You might consider a different gear count 9-37 (4.11) if available. Try Cryogenics International in Scottsdale, AZ. at (480) 991-0299. http://www.cryogenicsinternational.com/ They do good work.

Nitriding only hardens the surface. Depending on the process used, it may even soften the core material. It not likely to increase the strength of the tooth at the root.

As far at cryo, which alters the molecular structure of the entire piece, ask this outfit:

Cryogenic treating of powertrain parts & brake rotors

Hello All,
Food for thought. Cryogenic Treating of parts and components strengthens the material. Does not make them harder or more brittle! Brake rotors to engine blocks, a stress relieved, tougher piece of metal. dkimmel@300below.com

Yes, harder and stronger are definitely not the same thing. If your gears were to be hardened, they would most definitely get destroyed on a launch because they would be extremely brittle instead of having some ductility like they already have. Think about something like a tap, it is extremely hard and cuts through most metals but it will snap very easily because it is so hard and brittle. A brick is the same way, its easy to crack one but damn near impossible to crush one.
