Eaton Posi / Mosier 12 bolt Service

When I purchased my 02 Camaro (8500 miles on car) I changed the gear lube in the Moser 12 bolt rear end with Castrol stuff off the shelf from O'rielys. Which was supposed to have a friction modifier in it for posi rears.

I potentially over filled the rear end, placed close to 3 quarts of fluid in it then. I really didn't like the "feel" this fluid gave the rear end and I had a faint gear lube smell after a long drive.

This weekend I drained, replaced gasket and replaced the fluid with Lucas fluid and GM friction modifier. I hope this runs better than the castrol stuff.

I did notice a fluid film on the rear end and under the car, could it have been foaming and overflowing because of to much fluid? Would 1/2-3/4 quart make that much difference? The fluid looked "shiny" would this be from the clutches in the Eaton unit not liking the fluid? Like a suspension of very fine metal particles.

I will keep an eye on it, but hope I have it where it likes things now.

Yes over filling will cause aeration of the fluid and cause wear.

Yes it probably went out the vent tube, that was your faint smell while driving.
