Rear axle blowout

Long story but my rear axle is broke. It's making some grinding noise when in neutral and first gear and it won't move. My question is what am I in for price, labor, and parts.

It's usually the ring gear that breaks, so you need a new ring/pinion setup and a bearing kit.

Figure $270 in parts ($180 gears and $90 for the complete rebuild + bearing kit) and $300-500 in labor.

I have a 3.42 ring/pinion gear that you can have for $50 + shipping. It's a 3-series carrier out of my 6-speed. It's in good shape and it'll get you back on the road cheaper than buying a new one. All you have to spend is that $50 + shipping + the $90 complete rebuild kit.

I have traction control and A4 does it matter? Also are you selling me the bearing kit to?

I'm going to move this to the drivetrain forum.

How long would the labor be? If upgrading my rear axle what would best to hold it own against the stock power and future power add ons?

Labor would be 3-5 hours depending on many factors. Someone might be able to toss it in 2 hours, but your gears will whine and be prone to overheating/failure if they aren't set up properly.

The only real upgrade you can do to a 10-bolt is to buy a rear cover girdle for it to hold the caps down so that they don't move under shock. Other than that, it will blow eventually.

Or you can buy a 12-bolt or 9" rear end for around $2000 and never have to worry about it again.

One more 10 bolt upgrade that is worth it. Get a solid pinion spacer to replace the crush sleeve. It is only $18.00 but makes the gear set up take longer to get it perfect. It will ensure that pinion preload is never affected by hard launches.

But eventually the 10 bolt is going to blow.
