Quoted $455 for installing my gears.

I only know of one guy who specialize in gear swap outs around here. I called today and said I had the ring and pinion only. He quoted me $455 for the parts and labor with a 1 year warranty. Is this way to high or normal? Is this something any mechanic can do or a speciality trade that you better know what your doing?

Seems high to me. Install kit (bearings etc) cost roughly 125$ after tax/shipping. He is charging $330 to install gears. I paid $250 to install mine, I had all parts. I believe total I had $600 in a gear swap. That does not include correcting the speedo. That includes rear end fluid also.

Sounds kind of high, but if there aren't too many guys that know about doing gears, then that probably explains his prices. Yes it is a special "trade", and a bad gear install can trash your new gears. Ask him how much for just labor if you supply all the parts.

I found this Ebay auction for $84 S&H included. Does this look like a good install kit? I see others cheaper but look real cheap. Does it have everything I need and will work with my GM 3.73's?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-...4506.m20.l1116

You'l still need a "crush sleeve" with that kit. Otherwise it looks complete.

I would get the spacer instead of the crush sleeve.

Told them I wanted all the parts replaced that came with the kit so it came to $228. Car shifts a lot harder now but I need to update the tune for speedo and the shift points. I figure I need to take it easy for 100 or so miles so then I can see whats shes got.

Definently get that tuned asap, otherwise the shift points will be incorrect. Under $400 for a gear swap.... I hate you.
