new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

Thats about it.

Also, is this "skip shift" the reason that it always wants to go into 4th instead of 2nd when I'm taking it easy and shifting from 1st at a low RPM?

Oh, and should I get the skipshift eliminator and how does it install?

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

the 'skipshift' is a PITA in my opinion.
I have it on my 94Z (6spd) and yes, its only purpose is for economical reasons. Its supposed to save you gas money by bypassing 2nd and 3rd gears for normal driving. It comes on automatically once you've left a stopped position and hit 1500 rpms..then goes away after 2500 rpms. You can bypass it without using an eliminator by just reving slightly past 2500..like say 2700 or something. Thats what I do for now until I get the skip-shift eliminator. That simply plugs in..its real easy to install and use. They are only around $30 if I remember right, and used you can probobly get cheaper.
I think also..when I downshift from another gear like coming to a stoplight, I dont always go straight to neutral...and I downshift to 1st..sometimes it doesnt come on since I wasnt sitting in neutral. Sometimes Ill anticipate the light within a few seconds so I just hold the clutch in and keep it in 1st. Or once you've started the car..or left a stop light and stay in first for some reason (driving through a parking lot)...after you 'ignore' the skipshift and hit 2500 rpms and your rpms drop back down for some reason..if you leave it in first..it shouldnt hit the skip-shift again.
Its worth bypassing with the eliminator, and I think the money is worth it. I just havent done it yet..procrastinating and other things to buy lol
If you have the money, yes get one. There is absolutely no other reason other than the GM peeps putting something abit more 'normal consumer' friendly in the car. Our cars arent good on gas...its just another way to sell a muscle car when competing with booming SUV sales and other imports with 3 times the MPG.
Good luck,
Derek

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

What do you mean our cars aren't good on gas? Before I modified my TA it got close to 30 mpg on the interstate. With the blower, heads, cam, etc... I'm still getting around 22 mpg on the interstate, and that's with the AC pumping as well.

As far as the skip shift goes, if you're planning to do any sort of modifications to the car like heads/cam, just wait and have it programmed out of the computer. If you're just going to drive around like a normal person, then spend the $35 bucks and buy the skip shift eliminator.

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

Okay so our cars are 'alright' on gas
I know though..when I cruise in my Pathfinder..or even my old 92 (V8) camaro, I got way better mileage and could cruise for a day on one tank. Not now though..my 94Z cruises for a few hours and eats half a tank..I think with my current spark plug problem..Im eating more than normal. I swear it only get 200 out of a full tank these past few months! Thats horrible! hmm..about 14 gallons right? 200 miles..is around 14.2 mpg
Now consider in 94 when you could buy a toyota supra or an rx7..they probobly get more around 30 consistantly (non turbo'd supra maybe). However, I could get 10mpg and not replace a V8 LT1 Z28 for any import..only thing Id take over my Camaro is a GT40

Well look at some of your mods. Bigger cam usually equals a bigger gas bill.

Also, why would the non-turbo supras get better mileage than a tt version? As long as they're both cruising they should be equal. Also, didn't the tt version get a 6 speed and the non-turbo version get a 5 speed?

Get rid of the skip-shift ASAP. It didn't do anything from my gas milage, and it totally screws up how you drive. Sometimes you go to 2nd and sometimes you go to 4th. When you go to 4th, it's way too low of an RPM. I really can't believe that GM put forced this on the consumer. I bought the plug in module that won't throw a skip shift light, and gets rid of skip shift. I did the other, cheap mod first, but that made a skip shift light stay on.

I think I got it from LG motorsports.

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

My car consistantly got 25mpg driving back from Ohio to NJ... 658 miles each way and then to SC which is 700 miles each way. I even got 29.75 on one tank, with the AC cranked... (But I heard at that speed, the AC burns less gas then the windows open anyway)

Its funny, all the "Car Guys" at work swear they know everything on cars. But REFUSE to believe me that my 6 Speed 5.7 motor got nearly 30mpg!!

Cams really take away mpg? Is it the cam, or the extra heavy foot?

And 97WS6SCharged (Chris I think), you ever bring your TA to the dyno yet? I'm very curious to see what your car is putting down. Your cars are one of the baddest cars i've ever seen... just incredible man... So beautiful, so freakin powerful... just incredible dude.

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

I haven't been back to the dyno yet. I still need to install the alky kit I bought from Shawn and I want to put on a 10# pulley, it should get me 7-8PSI instead of the 4-5 I've been seeing on the 8 # setup.

Oh, the car went 11.40 @ 126 about 1 1/2 months ago on a borrowed set of drag radials, so it's making some good power. That was with the initial (don't blow it up) program load. Tony and I have been working on the program a little in the last few weeks. I probably won't be back at the track until the S10 is done. I can't afford to fix the car if something breaks. With the additional air flow and the alky kit, a 10.90 shouldn't be unreasonable, granted the tires will hook up. Not too shabby for a stock bottom end.

**Edit**
Oh, the cam thing is a mix of the two. You're burning more gas to keep the car close to stoich since the cam is letting more air into the engine. Plus the brain tells the right foot that the harder it presses, the more fun it will have.

Seriously though, it's all a matter of efficiency. A stock cam is designed to meet emissions and fuel economy standards while making a little bit of power. A big cam is designed to make power (usually in the upper RPM range) while emissions and fuel economy are put on the back burner. Since it's not as efficient in the low end where the car cruises, fuel economy suffers.

Dude that is so freakin fast... LMFAO A daily driver nonetheless. Freakin insane dude... you seem to really know your **** and don't mean to sound corny, but your one of the few people that I really pay attention to here on the board. Ask questions and whatnot, I mean damn... your car is freakin sick and your S10 looks like one hell of a project. Thats why I always bother private messeging you and all that.

Re: new to T56 - please explain "skipshift"

cags wasn't only meant to save gas but also pass emissions better therefore avoiding the gas guzzler tax
also, here is a different way of doing it w/out a resistor if you want
