Unhappy Never rebuilt 4l60e with 167k clunking on down and up shifts...HELP!

I have a 95Z28 with 167k. Transmission has never been touched other than the filter change I did about 6k ago. The fluid was a dark golden brown color and had strong burnt smell. The problem I'm having with the transmission is that when driving the transmission feels really sloppy, what I mean is on downshifts and upshifts it is really harsh, instead of shifting into gears it clunks into gears and this seems to get worse the longer it is driven, example like after being on the highway for an hour. When the car is cold it seeems to shift better. Am I pretty much looking at a rebuild?

Thanks for your time...Corey

That trans fluid got burnt. It's supposed to be red. Did you do a flush or pan drop? If you did a pan drop you may want to do another fluid change b/c you missed the burnt fluid in the torque converter. Another fluid change & check the level after running a bit may help a little. Otherwise, probably a rebuild.

I just dropped the pan and I did it when the car was warm should I have done it when it was cold?

W/ burnt fluid, there's not much difference. Slightly warm makes it flow out a bit quicker. Should have changed the fluid earlier.
