Moser 9" install problem...
Moser 9" install problem...
I installed a Moser 9" recently, everything seemed to bolt up fine and the install wasnt too bad. I noticed that the rear sits about 1/2 -3/4" to the left though. The left rear tire sticks out that much more than the right side, its seems like the whole thing is shifted to the left. When I took it out the first time and get on it hard it feels like the back end jumps to the left when I punch it which it never did with the stock rear, somethings not right. I'm using the stock torque arm mount, springs, shocks and panhard bar, and a stock 1LE ds with the correct ujoint. Also I have Metco heavy duty control arms that came with the rear mounted to bolt on relocation brackets. Do I need an adjustable panhard bar to correct this aligment? The stock one only bolts on one way, I thought it would work fine with this rear but maybe not.

Another question, how many quarts of oil does a Moser 9" hold? I bought it used and was supposed to get the spec sheet with it but I never got it. I added 4 quarts to it and it still wasnt full, I cant beleive it takes that much considering the old rear only used 2.

Everyone is different when it comes to the panhard rod. Some need it some dont. I did.
As for the lube, just fill it till it runs out and then cap it. I used a 5 gallon bucket with a pump, so I have no idea how much went in

I'll definitely get a new one then. I was shocked after I added 4 quarts to it and I still couldnt even feel the oil in there with my finger, guess I'll just keep adding it till it runs out then. Thanks for your help.
a few weeks ago my friend and i put a 9 inch in his z28. while we didn't have the problem you're having, we did have a few problems (driveshaft too short, axle was too long.....)
but his dad helped us, and his dad has been working on cars for 30 years, he's the one that set up the gears for the 9 inch....
and he said it only takes 2 quarts, and 1 thing of limited slip additive.....
and i trust what he says because the man knows cars
think about it like this......your engine takes 5.5 quarts, do you really think your rear end takes 5? the oil in your engine isn't to the top of the filler hole....

well okay....this guys' been building drag cars for 30 years.
he has a 10 second 41 coupe, with a 9 inch, and a low 12 second mustang with a 9 inch. and he's had plenty of other drag cars over the years.
and with the pumpkin head we used, (which was a used piece out of an old lincoln) he said to use 2 quarts. and guess what? it works.
i'd trust someone with 30 years of expirence building the thing, over some guys on the internet that say "well. it's huge tho.....so it has to take more than 2 quarts"

And you would only need a bottle of limited slip additive if you are using a GM style posi, which last time I looked wasnt available for a 9 inch. I had to go with a posi made by Trutrac and then do some grinding on it to make it fit. I dont suggest you use only 2 quarts, and the additive is not needed unless your carrier unit specifcally requires it.

but do what you want.
i think my moser only used 2 quarts......
i adjusted my PHR by using a plumb bob and measuring off the fender to the wheels to get them even, then went driving hard. After the drive, I had to adjust the PHR back to almost where it was with the stock rear!

Sorry to start such a big debate but I think I figured out the problem with the oil level. I looked for a plug on the front "center section" when I was filling it and I didn't see one. (Don't tell me it's behind that torque arm mount?) I was adding fluid through the filler hole high at the top of the rear of the case. Since I didnt see another hole anywhere I was assumming that was the level it needed to reach, which seemed very high. I just called Moser and they advised me there is a fill level hole on the front center section itself. I didnt see it when I was filling it, but I need to pull that plug, I think its probably a bit overfilled now.
