I bought 4, spilled at least half on the ground when the pump I was using gave out, and still had enough to make the fluid go out of the fill hole. So 4 should be good.

Edit: That is a beautiful SS, by the way.

The T56 Service manual on Shoebox's site says 4.1 quarts.

You can add through the shifter, but it's hard to tell if you're adding the right about. It's hard to drain all of the old fluid out. If you do fill through the shifter, take out the fill plug so that it won't overfill.

True.... I drained my tranny when the car was jacked up pretty high from the front. Being the drain plug is low near the rear of the T56, I figured this would be good. I think the main thing to focus on when your filling, is that if your going to use the fill hole as a measure to see how much fluid is in the tranny, that you make sure the car is level.

Very good point, Dave. Don't do it when it's too cold or too hot, as that might also change the volume of the fluid.
