How do you know when its time for a new clutch/gears?

What the subject says, the shifting on my car is ok, but every once in a while it "misses". I want to know what I should look for to see if its time for a new clutch or gears....

You need to describe what is happening with a little bit more detail . What exactly are you doing when it "misses" .
