How do U take out shift lever knob?

How do U take out shift lever ****?
OK how do you take out the handle, I pulled out the pushin button and all I have is left is the ****. Looks like it should pull straight out but wont even budge. is there something inside the **** that I cant see? trying to replace my carpet thanks Andel
