Hot trans

I was drag racing last night and did about 7-8 passes. My tranny was around 220-230* Also I later found out i was about a quart low of tranny fluid. Would the excess heat be caused from low fluid? Also my last run at around 80mph my motor surged to 5800 I was in third(auto) would the low fluid do that also?

ps: It was about 80* at the track, 6pm

its not uncommon to run 200* + at the track after repeated passes but 230 is getting a LITTLE on the dangerous side even just for the temporary abuse. low fluid CAN cause extra heat because when the bands and clutches don't have enough fluid to work properly, they tend to slip. slipping is extra friction and friction = heat.

EDIT: if u haven't already, get urself a tranny cooler and lower your fan settings to get some more air moving through the cooler. a deep trans pan will also help. i have all of the above and run around 160* in extended driving with a high stall converter.
