Angry HELP! Trans won't stay in park

wowwwww am I frustrated!

The other day I was drivin my 91 Camaro RS (305) to hockey and when I parked and let off the brake, it started pulling forward...I was like WTF??? so I slightly tapped the shifter down and it went right back into overdrive.....so it seemed like it was sticking or something.

Well today I was in my friends driveway and it's on a slant...so when I went to put it in park I started goin backwards......my car was stuck in reverse and everytime I put it in park and let off the brake it would just go back into reverse!!! Finally after about 5 minutes of trying to shift it from R to P and D to P....it finally stayed still and went into park.

I was scared as hell when I knew I had to stop in my driveway.....so sure enough when I put it into park it went backwards into reverse.......and after 10 long minutes it finally went into park and I put the E-Brake on and logs under the tires.

I'm so scared that I'll have to get a new transmission because I'm suffering financially bad enough as it is.....so has anyone had this problem or possibly know a solution for it?

Thank you sooo much

I'd say just the shifter linkage on the side of the transmission is loose (I mean where the cable bolts up). It happened on my buddy's '96 T/A, and all it took was <5 minutes to go under the car with a 13mm (I think ) socket & ratchet and tighten it back up again! If it's not that, then maybe the shifter cable is stretched or out of adjustment, but make sure that it's tight where it bolts onto the driver's side of the tranny first.

Sounds like your linkage came loose no big deal just get under there and tighten it back up.

awesome, thanks a lot guys

your knowledge is a breath of fresh air to me lol...and if that doesn't work I think it must be a worn shifter cable.

would you by anychance have some pictures of what the linkage/bolt I need to tighten looks like?

Thanks again

I had the same issue. LoL I ended up fixing mine with two broken off plastic fork peiced. My linkage kept moving through the hole in the mount for it. I just wedged the little push tabs open with the fork. Been working for 2 years

Sorry, I don't have any pics, but trust me, you can't miss it. Unless it's different (doubt it) than how they bolt to a 4L60E (since yours is 4L60) then you'll see the cable come through the floor and towards the tranny on the driver's side. Where the mount bolts up is to a couple of the tranny pan bolts, so unless that bracket broke or something, then there are likely 2 bolts loose (or missing! ) on the tranny pan. Tighten and enjoy PARKING your car again!

thanks for all the replies guys..

ok so today I got a new shifter cable and I FINALLY put it in right........but I accidently moved the part that connects to the transmission (the one bolt part that bolts to a lever).....it clicked a couple times and was in a different position. I'm assuming this is the thing that shifts the gears. well my question is...where should I move the lever to when bolting up the new cable? I moved it all the way towards the front of the car today and this is what happened:

PARK is now REVERSE
REVERSE is now NEUTRAL
NEUTRAL is now OVERDRIVE?

wtf!!! any ideas?

You should be able to click that little lever relatively easy through all the gears. Going into park though it's kinda hard. Inside the transmission there is a half moon shaped peice of metal with several little notches hooked to that lever(each gear), then one big notch which would be park. Just unhook the linkage and move that lever all the way forward as far as it'll go. It's kinda a bigger move as far as distance goes than between the rest of the gears. Hook the linkage back up(make sure shifter is in park) and you should be fine.

Re: HELP! Trans won't stay in park

got everything working right

I had to cut the tabs on the part above the rubber thing so it'd stay in the bracket.

thanks so much to everyone that helped!!
