Help with clutch install
I have a 1993 T56 I'm putting in a Camaro and I bought a new stock style clutch kit and had my flywheel resurfaced. On my new pressure plate there is a yellow dot marked on it and I was told it should line up with an X or some type of mark on the flywheel. My flywheel does not have any type of mark on it. So does it matter how the pressure plate is oriented or can you just line it up any which way without it making a difference? Also I was wondering how easy the clutch alignment tool should slide in and out because I was told there should be no resistance but there seems to be some on mine. Maybe its the new pilot bushing being a little tight. Just not sure. It still slides in and out with just a little bit of force.
I had alignment problems with 97 t56 and spec clutch. So, when I had fit problems (allways do), I installed the clutch actuator on the trans, engaged the fork, and pressed the clutch pedal by hand half way. It pulls the trans forward for engagement, and, partially releases the clutch disk so the pilot bearing, clutch spline, and trans dowels all line up. Works every time. There is alot of slop in those plastic alignment tools, and, have not worked well for me. Hope this helps. (97ss - 383 - D1)... B.
I changed my clutch about 3 months ago and I was using the Plastic alignment tool and it worked perfect. It was so easy to put in and upp out that when you pulled on it, the pilot bearing would create vacum and pull the tool back in. It should not be hard at all to put in or remove the alignment tool. If it is you need to loosen the Pressure plate then put th alignment tool and make sure the clutch plate is center then crank down the pressure plate bolts.
when i installed a stage 2 in my 2000 ss i had to use a pair of plyers to pull out the alignment tool. i was working with a certified mechanic on a military instalation. he told me that this is normal.
Was not certified enough. The alignment tool should not have any pressure in pulling out. The Clutch plate was not centered properly. I was able to pull it out with my pinky, thats how perfectly centered the clutch plate was.
I went out and bought the metal clutch alignment tool and used that instead of the plastic POS that came with the clutch kit. This solved all of my alignment problems. I used a micrometer to measure the tip of the plastic tool and it was .020 smaller than the pilot bushing inner diameter. The metal one was only about .001 smaller and it lined everything up perfect. I knew I should have just spent the money for the metal tool in the first place.
