having t-56 rebuilt, should i beef it up?
hi all,
well, the tranny finally took a dump on me, lost 2nd and reverse
so it's going in wedensday for a rebuild. i don't know too much about what wears out in these 6 speeds. what should i have done to this to make it handle up to 500 hp/tq? is there a site that i can go to to order these parts? i want this thing close to bullet proof so this doesn't happen again. i do beat the hell out of my truck

How long did yours last and how were you driving when it died?
Anyway, synchros or bearings are almost always what dies on manuals, synchros are the best thing to go out anyway, they don't cause any damage.
http://www.ddperformance.com has quite a bit of stuff, take a look around. You should of course get new synchros and bearings. Shift forks, the input shaft and output shaft are what most people upgrade on these.

it's always a good idea to upgrade some things. a steel shift fork and better grade synchros are a must. maybe better struts for the synchros. D&D does have good stuff.

excellant, thanks! i definately need strong forks, i'll get the best synchros i can, and i also expect to have to get a new reverse assy.
do you think a decent lt1 stroker pushing 500/500 MAX using a spec stage 3 would be too much for those imput/output shafts to handle? i'm not sure on my hp/tq ratings yet, the dyno tune is up soon after the tranny is done
it should be in the 400's i hope.

ummmmmm. well here's the deal on the tranny. i bought my truck with an lt1/t56 swap done on it already. actually the guy who did it was a member on this board. ( can;t remember his screen name) but shortly after i got the truck, the motor lost oil pressure and the truck sat for 3-4 months while i put a new engine in. the new one is stroked and "supposedly" was supposed to have 600 hp. i called b.s. on that and am hoping for low to mid 400's from a complete dyno tune. i don't know if the new motor helped the tranny **** out but maybe this will explain my loss of second gear: i was getting on the on ramp to the interstate, and jsut passed the break in period for the new motor/clutch so i wanted to see what my baby could do. needless to say i was wailing on it like i was at the strip. 1-2 shift was fine, 2-3 i heard a whine so loud it scared me and i pulled over to check everything out. i thought it was the clutch slipping, but i know i torqed everything right, made sure the flywheel and pressure plate were spotless....etc. and i also have a spec aluminum flywheel along with the stage 3. is it possibile that that combo would slip? i thought they were rated for 600+ hp right? and i'm damn sure i'm not putting out that much to start slipping clutches and smoking tranny's.
the sound i heard was like a brake drum on the lathe when it starts the harmonics if you cut it just right. shortly after i heard that, i lost 2nd. jsut grinds gears when you try and put it in. i hope that makes siince, i'm confusing myself here
