Flexplate/starter help? Please!

I just replaced my flexplate in my car because it was cracked. After putting everything back together, when I would cruise at 55 in OD and then give it enough gas to downshift into 3rd, there was a knocking sound. I have found out that the flexplate is hitting the starter right on the flat part of the starter housing where the opening to the starter is, running parallel to the flexplate. I know you can shim the starter to adjust the the starter up and down but there is no adjustment for it front and back. As far as the flexplate goes, it is installed right and the car runs fine normally. Is there something I'm missing or does someone know of a way to allow more space between the starter and flexplate? Thanks in advance,

Kyle
