Car makes clicking noise when going from park to reverse
Car makes clicking noise when going from park to reverse
The car is a 2000 Camaro SS A4.
When I go from park to reverse, it makes a clicking sound everytime. Is this normal? It's kinda like a "tick, tick, tick, tick" real fast.

My car does the same thing and others I know with the A4 say their car does it too.
I asked the guy at my trans. shop what it was and he says when GM makes our aluminum driveshafts, during the welding process pieces of aluminum get trapped inside the driveshaft forvever after they're sealed up and ready to be installed. So the "tink-tink-tink" you're hearing are pieces of aluminum inside your driveshaft. You'll also hear the sound sometimes if you're taking off from a dead stop. Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with your car, it's perfectly normal.

Q: I have an LS1 F-body with an automatic transmission, and each time I put my car into gear from park and each time I accelerate from a stop, there is a ping or tinking noise that sounds from underneath my car. Where is this coming from and how do I fix it?
A: This is a problem with the automatics that have an aluminum driveshaft. The aluminum driveshaft comes standard on the cars with the 3.23 (GU5) rear end. Although there is no TSB to fix this, if you have the dealer replace the driveshaft with a new one, the sound will go away. However most people who had this repair done report that it comes back. As of this time, there doesn't appear to be a permanent fix other than replacing the driveshaft with a carbon fiber one.

The info is still correct though. I have personally had my driveshaft replaced 3 times on my car and its come back all 3 times. I have over 69k miles on the car and have never had any problems with it, so, its safe to say, its just another one of those annoying anomalies that wont actually hurt anything.
Re: Car makes clicking noise when going from park to reverse
This is an old thread but I have the same problem. My dealer said to fill the driveshaft with foam sealant like "Greatstuff foam" by driling two holes in the driveshaft and filling the shaft from both ends. Has anyone ever heard of this? Won't it weaken the driveshaft?

Has anyone found any other cure for the problem? GM wants $300.00 for a new driveshaft and I hate to spend it if the problem will just re-appear.
