"Breaking" a rear end

When people talk about breaking their rear end, what are they talking about? Are they talking about the axles, the ring and pinions, or what?

I see alot of people talking on here about getting the 12-bolt rear end to solve this problem. But recently, one of my buddies broke his rear end... he said he shredded his ring and pinion. Like alot of people on here, he said that breaking your rear end is common on f-bodies if you're not careful.

Anyway, all he did to fix it was get a new ring and pinion set (got 4.11's now) and I think he put in a new differential.

So what I want to know is... when you typically break your rear end, wouldn't just fixing the broken gears be a better choice than forking out $2000 for a whole new rear end?

Ask your buddy when he has to go in and replace them again. That is the difference. With the 12-bolt it is a done deal - no need to worry. By just rebuilding the 10-bolt he is taking a chance on having to rebuild it again after it breaks -- which it more than likely will. When it breaks he will be without his car again for whatever period of time it takes to get the repairs made and will again be charged the money for repairs. The 12-bolt is just STRONGER and will last. The 10-bolt can go at any time -- may last forever may last 1 launch. True the 12 is a lot more money up front, but it should be a 1 time fix that is strong enough that you do not have to 'be careful' in your F-bod like your buddy was saying. It allows you to launch how you want because it is built to take it. I am currently looking at ordering my 12 bolt in the next couple of weeks due to my 10 bolt breaking --- ring and pinion gears and spiders and differential. I looked at ordering the TA performance girdle, the stronger girdle studs, strange 4.10 gears, and the differential for the 10 bolt, but from everyone I talked to they said the same thing I am telling you. Do not waste your time trying to strenghten the 10 bolt it is not worth the time money and effort as it will still break. The 12 bolt is an expensive security blanket that allows us to launch hard and not worry about it! Hope this helps. Trust me I would rather have saved money and rebuilt the 10, but this way I know I'll be ok.

I also stripped ring and pinion. I'm saving for a 12 bolt. I had assumed the carrier would explode, spitting spider gears and other destrution. I had richmond 3.73s and a girdle. It may have made it last a little longer but its inevidable, 7.5" ring gears will break if you beat on it from a dead stop.

after breaking 3 10 bolts I decided it was cheaper to go with a Moser 9 inch.I broke 2 sets of spider gears and the last time I got everything, spider gears, axle gears, ring and pinion, cross pin and split the posi case.

Well, I know that a new 12-bolt is around ~$2000 US$, but a guy I know up here just bought one for his car, and spent around ~$4000 CDN$. Sorry, but that's A LOT of friggin' money if you ask me. Unfortunately, that's what it costs after the exchange and all that BS.

SO, when I got the 4.10's for my car, I bought another complete 10-bolt (supposed to have 4.10's, actually had 3.23's, but I got 4.10's in it now). I also took another 10-bolt from a guy I know who just had it laying around (2.73's), but needed it for the spider gears for the 4.10 diff I put in (surprise, surprise!). HOWEVER, at this point I've got less than $1000 of 10-bolt differentials, but I've now got a set of 4.10's, 3.23's, and 2 sets of 2.73's! I also have 6 good axles, and 3 complete housings (only 2 complete carriers though). So I figure I'm good for a whole helluvalotta breaking 10-bolts before I have to fork out ~$4000 for a 12-bolt.

Ha! I wish! Fortunately I'm not working for minimum wage anymore, but up until 2 - 3 years ago, I was, and at the time (in Ontario, I don't know about the other Provinces) it was $6.85/hr . I think it's supposed to have gone up recently though, to $7.10/hr, IIRC? I think over the next 3 - 4 years, it's going to be around ~$7.85/hr or something like that.

Basically though, for anything that we buy from the US, add tax, plus the ~30% - 35% exchange rate, plus duty fees at the border (I don't even know how they calculate that ) so by the time we get something, we've paid "roughly" ~1.85 times as much as the listed price! So take a $2000 differential, X 1.85 = $3700, + shipping and handling!!!

......yeah, it sucks big monkey *****!
