automatic SS

yes i wish i had a manual too, but this was the only ss ive seen in my area for a while!

anyway, ive got a question about the tranny.
im sure everyone has seen the setup, park - reverse - neutral - overdrive - drive - 2 - 1

1) ive heard that when u want to go fastest from dig, you go 1 - 2 - drive - overdrive

2) but ive also heard that when u floor it, the car is tuned to shift at peak hp (ive heard that most hp gain is at 5400 rpm for a 350)

so i tried 1 - 2 - d - od i started at 1, but when i shifted, the car itself had about 2-3 seconds before it actually switched, i was just wondering which if the above is true 1 or 2, and why is there a delay? you kinda have to time it right if your driving that way, wierd!

i would stop trying to manually shift the automatic if I were you, unless you want to have to get a new tranny. It really kills them quickly. I friend on mine found that out first hand.

I know what you mean about that delay when you shift manually.....I've found that you need to shift between 5000 - 5500 RPM if you want the shift to occur at ~6000 RPM.

I've manually shifted my auto from time to time, and I don't think there's a problem with it. If you ALWAYS do it, maybe it'll prematurely wear out some parts, but the best is to leave the car in 3rd or 4th (D or OD) and let the computer do the shifting. You can get a programmer (or have the car programmed) so that the shift points are raised higher than factory (which is about 5700 - 5800 RPM) but depending on what gears you've got (probably 3.23's in your SS? ) then it might not even be worth it.

I know that with 2.73's in my car, it was better to hold 1st gear and 2nd gear a little longer (usually to about ~6000 - 6100 RPM) in the 1/4 mile, otherwise the car was shifting into 3rd gear just before the traps, and that's a waste of time.

Mine stock did that too when I tried to shift it myself. It is best to let it shift like everyone else said. I had wanted a 6spd too and also ended up with an auto, but change the gears, add a shift kit and install a torque converter. You will be impressed. They make a world of difference. I would not want a stick now.
