about rear end cover with load bolts
Ok i have a question...about a month ago..i blew my rear end...broke 4 teeth off the gear. So. i brought it to Eastside performance in wallingford and spend 1300 on the "best" parts. brand new gears, auburn PRO posi, and a MAC rear end cover with load bolts. Well..yesterday i was driving it...it doesnt have more then 1500 miles on it...i was goin around a corner and stomped on it and kicked the car sideways. It started ticking. today i pulled off the cover..and now 2 teeth are chipped. As i was taking off the cover..i noticed i could turn4 of the 8 bolts off my hand. ALso.. the left load bolt wasnt touching the carrier. You can see the thread isnt as far in..then on the carrier..theres lil scuffs on the right side where one was touching..and NOTHING on the left side. And i looked at the covera and one bolt wasnt put in as far. A week after i got the car back from eastside i brought it in cuz it was whining REALLY bad. They took it apart said nothing was wrong..then put it back and i dont know what they did but they didnt put the left load bolt on all the way. **Would that have any effect on chipping the teeth?** I dont know what to do bcuz i have to be back in virginia by tuesday 7am(navy) and i have no way to get down there and my mechanic told me the rear end was set up wrong. Also ever since i got it back...there was play in the driveshaft and you could hear the rear end click.Someone please get back to me. If they set it up wrong they should be paying for it. By the way..the car is completely stock other than exhaust msd and intake and i know its not making nearly enough power to hurt the rear.
Re: about rear end cover with load bolts
Damn!!.. Well I'll tell ya that they might not cover it due to the fact that you romped on it and it broke... YOur mechanic can put a rear in it in under a day. .just get a new ring and pinion... how bad is the teeth chipped? on the ring? or the pinion? The cover not being tensioned onto the bearing cap's isn't the "cause" of the failure But it didn't help it any... 10bolt's are weak.. call your command today and give your Chain a heads up on your situation.. i'm sure they'll accomodate ya unless there's a underway.. If the rear ain't chipped that bad and there are no teeth MISSING.. you can throw some more fluid in it and drive it back.. And have it fixed in The H.R area..
Edit: have you talked to Eastside yet? Guy said bring it back.. They were expecting ya....

well theres 2 teeth missing on the ring gear..not to mention..the ABS gear teeth..(that go around the posi) are cracked a lil bit. I talked to kenny today and also mentioned that the light was going ON and OFF on the way home from VA...i wasnt beating on it then. He said that was from a bad unit on the posi. Everything is a month old. Also...i didnt think i was paying 1300$ to have to pay for it all over again a month later. A stock 10 bolt can take a beating.. I know ive had 2 other fbodys(1 being the identical car) stock...my last trans ams 10 bolt held up great. and the car had a 150 shot of nitrous and slicks. i bought the "best of the best" parts for this rear end...the car is almost stock other than exhaust and intake....and its going to break with only 1500 miles on it????makes no sense to me. ESP since ive beat on it very rarely becuase from the start it was making uncomfortable noises. He said it was from doing holeshots. When it happend i was going around a corner...and i stomped on the gas....i didnt drop the clutch and spin(which is where all the shock usually comes from.) I dont know i dont have any more money to spend on this rear end..thats where all of my other extra money went to .....LAST MONTH. something wasnt right. I talked to someone else who has had close to 500 rw...with the same **** as me and has had it for over a year..with no problems ever..and he goes to the strip. My car doesnt even have 300rw and has never been to the strip..and this happens....
Re: about rear end cover with load bolts
so far the response was..if you beat on it..its going to break...but ill see what i can do.....well..i didnt pay 1300$ for a performance rear end..for it to break 1500 miles later. Something couldnt of been right for that to happen because i didnt give it a huge amount of shock....i was already moving..and just put the pedal to the floor and went sideways...i didnt rev it then drop the clutch..which even that...should be completely fine..since my last t/a..i did that almost every day..with drag slicks on the stock carrier..that had over 100k miles on it. I had stock everything on the car including tires....
ill find out more by the end of the day

Re: about rear end cover with load bolts
I'll say it was a crap-shoot with the axles...
I had a shop do mine up and re-build it with all new parts and 4.10 gears...
less than 1500 miles later mine grenaded as well... I guess it didn't like those nitto's
And for $1300, I would have coughed up the rest of the $$ and just gone with a 9" or 12-Bolt... But this is comming from someone who made the same mistake and spent about the same amount on the stocker and finally said f-it and bought a Strange... Now my car is an animal and I don't ahve to worry about breaking anything.
