About to do the reverse syncro flip.

Anyone have any tips. I was just going to stand the tranny up and remove the tail shaft cover to do it.

Is it as simple as unbolting it, and sliding it off?

Re: About to do the reverse syncro flip.

It's been a year or so since I've been inside my T56, but I do know it's a little more complicated than that. For one, there is a dowel pin in the shifter that I'm pretty sure needs to be removed to get the tailshaft off. It's not too hard, just use a punch and drive it downwards, but make sure you have a rag or something under it, so that it doesn't fall into the tranny. Luckily reverse is near the tailshaft and is the first gear that comes out, so it shouldn't be too bad once you get the tailshaft off. Just be careful and try to keep the syncro assembly together when you pull it out to flip it, since those keys and spring are a PITA to get back in if it does come apart. Can't think of too much else that you should watch out for, since the tailshaft is definitely the easiest part. I have taken my T56 completely apart a couple times and I can remember that the tailshaft part was a breeze compared to the rest :) Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions along the way!

Ya it's been about two years since I rebuilt mine. Having a service manual helps, and I would also strongly suggest you stay very organized with the parts you pull out and make sure they go back in the same way. I must say though that all the parts in the extension housing (think that is the correct name) are pretty easy to remove especially compared to the rest inside the trans.

Good luck,
Dave

Yes, you have to remove a roll pin to remove the rear offset lever and slide the tailshaft off. The only thing you will need is a snap ring for the reverse shift fork. The manual says this must be replaced after being removed. I didn't replace this on mine when I did my synchro rebuild, and I probably should have.
