A4 shifter problems

Problem first started a year ago. When it get cold out side the car would not want to shift out of park after it had been sitting. I disconnected the sensor that keeps you from shifting out of park with out the brake and it went away (it warmed up outside). This winter it came back and my wife was stuck at work. She let it run for 20 min as i was driving to pick her up she finally got the button in. Now it will not shift back into park. I can get it into park if i have the consol off and push up on the metal piece that the shifter button releases but its like that piece gets stuck open or closed. One out of every 20 times i shifted into park it worked Is it just time for a new shifter?

Bump. Anyone?

My wife is having the same problem. Especially when it is cold outside. You almost have to punch the button down to get it out of park.

I'll be trying the search more to see if I can find an answer, but if you know, please tell me.

Thanks
Brad

Searched and finally found two old threads pertaining to the problem.

Shoebox suggests "The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid under the console may not be working. Unplug it and see if you then can shift"

He is the man when it comes to these cars, so that is what Im going to attempt.

I had what sounds like the same problem a couple months ago. I had to slam the button down to shift out of park. A couple of weeks later my ignition switch burned up so I replaced it and my problem went away. I guess the transmission park/lock cable that goes from the ignition switch to the shifter was jamming up in the ignition switch.
