Question A4 only works when shifted manually

Hey all,

I have a '96 Z28, A4, 3.73's with about 82,000 miles on it. Last week I got on it a bit at a light and heard that horrible sound of the differential totally grenading ....So, took it all apart over the past week, replaced everything and now it seems I have another problem that I'm not too familiar with.

The car now drives fine, mostly....It works great as long as I shift it manually. If I try to start with the shifter drive or overdrive it acts as if its in neutral, but, if I start in 1 (or 2) then shift to D, then OD, it works fine all the way through 3rd and into 4th gear....when slowing down, if im cruising in 4th (shifter in OD) and slow down to around 20 mph (normal 2nd gear speed), the tranny seems to go into neutral and will stay there until I shift out of OD and into 2 where it catches 2nd gear and can then be manually shifted again to get back to 4th gear...Fliud level is good and Reverse, Park and Neutral all work normally.....Anyone ever seen/heard of anything like this? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Unfortunatly its comon to break either the LOW/ROLLER clutch or input sprag on the trans during a differential failure.
Sorry but you need a trans too.

I was afraid of that....Thanks for the info. Performabuilt.

Forgot to ask...Is it ok to drive for the next few days? The Z is my daily driver to work (about 15 miles) and its probably gonna take a little time to find a tranny.
