4L60E input shaft size for torque converter

I've been told that my car (97 TA) has a larger input shaft than pre-97 trans am's so I cannot take a converter off an older car and throw it on mine. Is this true? Why do most sites group the 84-97's together then?

The reason I am asking is that a buddy has a 2800 lockup stall off a 96 chevy truck that I want to use, but he said it wont work because my input shaft is larger than 93-96 4L60E's.
