Anybody running them in a dd that sees a good deal of highway driving? I know most say go 3.73 in a dd auto but that isn't much of an increase imo from my 3.42.

How do you like them and what is the difference in gas mileage?

 

I agree with the previous reply. It will only benefit you if you race it a lot. It will dissappoint you if it is your DD with lots of highway miles driven on a daily basis.

 

I run 4.11's right now. I've had 3.73's before too. I think IMO that 4.11's are a better gear for 1/4 mile racing unless your on the bottle. If you do a lot of highway rolls, go with 3.73's because i get in to O/D at about 110 and O/D is a long gear wich when shifting into it, my RPM drops to 3k sucks. Your call boss, I Drive only 8 miles a day so gas doesn't hurt me. I will say though that 4.11's make more toirque down low.

 

thanks guys. I didn't care too much about mpg but if 4.10's will kill my 10 bolt then I'll just stick with 3.42 and get a good torque converter. Any advice on a good stall speed? All I have is a crane 227 cam, intake, headers, catback, tune. My car is my only car too so driveability is very important. what str should I get? I have pretty sticky p255/50/16 on the rear but they are not drag radials so I don't want to be spinning every time I hit it.

 

4.10's are bad news in a 10 bolt regardless of a M6 or 4.10 car.

4.10's are also for sticky tires cars, good luck hooking with them on streets.

And FWIW, I've had 3.73's as well, and neither one is "great" on the highway (they both cause the car to scream down the road) so if you can handle that, then it doesn't matter what ratio you're running. Also, it's about ~2600 RPM to do ~70 mph. 80 mph is ~3000 RPM. Fuel mileage wise? Typically I'm doing a 50/50 mix of city/hwy, but the highway driving is often stop and go, so it's more like ~90/10 city/hwy, and I still average ~230 miles per tank, same as I always did with 2.73's .

And TRACTION isn't as bad as you may expect. Just run decent tires? That last time I was at the track with the 4.10's (2 summers ago now) I was cutting 1.9x 60' times all day long, consistant 13.0's, and the car was bogging off the line and that was on street tires! A set of DR's only slowed me down even more!

 

I'd agree with every bit of this but the small size of the 4.10 gear would scare me to run at the track. I saw no difference in mileage when changing from the 2.73 to the 3.73. I ran a 1.84 60' with drag radials before the latest engine work. In a street car with automatic now I would stick with a 3.42 based on that experience. If you are shooting for a specific rpm to cross the finish line then that is a different story.

 

If you want gas mileage stay high, if you want track results go big, if you want something in the middle to with 3.73s.

 

I already pull consistant 1.82 - 1.83 60's, through my 2.73's, I just can't wait to see what 4.30's and a real tire will do, and yeah I still plan on driving it to work when I want/need to...

I too agree with everyone above, but remeber everyone says that 4.10s get better MPG for stop and go city driving, but hurt you a little more on highways so thats up to the individual to decide what they want...

 

4.10's are fine. I have them and cant complain. Dont fear the gear.
