3.73 (2 series) gear install pricing

Wow,

After speaking with a couple shops about a 2.73 to 3.73 gear swap, they both told me about $550-$560. I know the thick ring gear (not the spacer method) may add $ to the parts, but doesn't this seem a bit high for parts and install?

Does anybody have any recomendations for mid Michigan?

If you are buying the gears and install kit through them, then that sounds like a normal price. Heres the breakdown for mine:

Gears and install kit from online: $190 shipped
Labor to install gears: $250 ( this covered the labor + fluid + gm limited slip additive)

Total cost: $440

In this area the install itself ranges between 250 and 300 for labor depending on what is done. I had all the bearings redone and the axle tubes welded, so that was 300. The materials can add up to be the difference depending on what's used and where you got it.

I got most of my stuff used of the board clasifieds
used rear with 2.73 gears - 100
used 3.73 gears for 3 series carrier - 75
used gear spacer - 20
new install kit w/bearings - 120
new alum. support cover - 150
install labor - 300

total = 765 and I still have my stock one to swap back in if the current one breaks, or I can build that one up too...

Had a local shop do my install....including gears, fluid, slip diff fluid, and labor...was around $500. So, it's a fair price.

You might consider getting on of those aluminum rearend cover while you're at it, and they can install that during the installation. If you bring the part, they should increase the labor charge, b/c they have to remove/replace the cover anyways.

Have fun...you'll love 2.73s to 3.73s...
