2.73's and a stall
Would this be a good combination for the mean time till i get some money for gears?

Re: 2.73's and a stall
if you were to do it, it should be no more than a 2800 stall at the MOST...maybe go with a 2400. AND you would HAVE to add a tranny cooler to prevent the excessive heat from the TC slipping so much. Most people say that you shouldn't put a high stall TC with 2.73 gears.

Re: 2.73's and a stall
I run a 3200 with my 3,23s, cars perfect on the street, no issues.

Re: 2.73's and a stall
can anyone confirm that there is extra heat buildup on a stalled 2.73 car? i hear it from some, and not from others...

Re: 2.73's and a stall
Adding a stall will create extra heat no matter what gears you've got. Just be sure to run a tranny cooler and you should be ok:cool:.

thats exactly what i thought, thank you! :)

Actually it has gotten so fun, that it has become my current goal. I want to be one of the fastest stock bottom end, 4l60, stock 2.73 rear, stock suspension cars in that fastest LT1 list running around! :D But either way, I think it is fun to beat someone and see this look  when I tell them I haven't really done much and it even has the stock 2.73 gears! |
Re: 2.73's and a stall
how do you like stop/go traffic with that settup, and how is traction too? i always wondered about that because you still have some nice launching capability, but without some of the downsides of lower gears..

You do or don't have a locking converter?

Re: 2.73's and a stall
I put a 2800 stall TCi in my Monte when it had a 350 with a th350 and the stock rear with 2.56! I droped a 1.1 secs in the quarter, best $200 I have spent in my LIFE! It was nice b/c I still had the highway b/c of the long gear, but I could load up the converter and the motor loved it, no more super long gears.

With my converter if I hit the gas barely to make it move slowly the RPM's go to about 2000 and sits there longer untill I reach the road speed to match what 2000 rpms should be, but it actually shifts before that because the shifts are done sooner with less throttle. So in normal stop and go traffic, my car just stays around 2000 rpm's when moving. Something like this (these are estimated numbers just to show what I am trying to say); 1st gear 2000 rpm's from 0 - 5 MPH, shifts to second stays 2000 from 6 - 15 MPH, shifts to thrid and stays 2000 from 16 - about 25 MPH, I am normally slowing down before I get much faster then that in traffic! This is why I say it is always slipping in traffic!! |
Re: 2.73's and a stall
The reason people say you get too much heat with a high stall and high gears is if your crusing speed down the highway is less than your stall your converter is never fully "locking". I had the same problem with my old setup with a 2800 stall and 308s with a turbo 350. Thats why i went to an m6 :)

Re: 2.73's and a stall
isnt the converter locked on the highway though...

Re: 2.73's and a stall
It depends on the spead you are going if it is locked, and if it isn't locked then you are also not doing the RPM's that would be full stall, in my case around 3500 RPM's then it is slipping...
I cruse on the highway at about 55 MPH and 2500 RPM's the conveter locks around 60 - 62 MPH with less then 25% throttle (cruising) when I hit that lockup speed my RPM's drop to about 1600.. And in traffic it is sometimes hard to go fast enough to have the conveter lock! |
