1st and R giving me troubles

Ok so i got my clutch replaced with a McLoed a few weeks ago and im just starting to notice especailly in stop and go traffic that my tranny REALLY doesnt want to go into 1st gear. I really have to force it in there. The same is true with reverse.

I have also noticed that it only does this when the engine is good and warmed up. It will shift SMOOTH when the engine is off even when it is hot.

Lastly when I brake it will shift into 1st smoothly like comming to a stop sign. But in stop and go traffic, my clutch is just too damn heavy to hold down, and it is a pain to get in gear when completely stopped.

I have added royal purple gear oil into the gear box and it is full.

Any ideas?

Try double clutching it before you put it into reverse. As for first gear try first shifting into second gear then pushing it up into first gear.

First of all, you cant double clutch unless you are moving and secondly.... there is a problem here, something is up. I usually go 2nd and then 1st when it gets tricky.

So you cant push the clutch down then let it up and then push it down again?

Double clutching isnt pushing the clutch in twice. It is when you pull the clutch out at the right rpm matched for the speed.

For example in a m6, the gears are 2.66 for 1st and 1.78 for second. If you are at 2660 rpm in 1st and shift into second, you would pull the clutch out at EXACTLY 1780 rpm. It saves wear on the clutch and synchros if im not mistaken. Obviously you cant do this unless the car is moving.

But yes i can push the clutch in twice, it doesnt solve the problem.

Is there any sort of cags associated with 1st or R that can do this? Im thinking it is some sort of computer problem, but i dunno.

Did you clean the pressure plate and flywheel when you replaced the clutch? Also did you put in a new pilot bearing/bushing?

New pressure plate (McLoed ) and resurfaced flywheel. Dont know about the Pilot bearing/bushing. If you are talking about throwout bearing, yea thats new too. The clutch is FINE, it is something in the tranny.

In the small hole in the middle of the flywheel there is either a roller bearing or bushing that the nose of the input shaft slides into called a pilot bearing/bushing depending on what it is. I have seen similar problems when those go bad. Other than that the only thing I can think is maybe the slave cylinder needs to be bled and isn't letting the clutch release fully.

How would that affect my car from not letting me go into 1st or R???

I HIGHLY doubt it is clutch related, but it did start doin this after i got my clutch replaced.

You will need an adjustable slave. The stock on doesn't have enough travel in it.Mcloed sells them but the are pricey. I think $250.

So its prolly something in the slave?

Is the clutch not fully disengaging? Why would it matter then if i was decellerating (sp?) ??? IT also doenst do it when the engine is cold.

I think all the mcleod clutches come with new flywheels and adjustable slaves thats why they are pricey.
The problems you describe are master problems and for sure show up as hard to get into first and reverse. In fact with my cartech instructions and adjustable master it says you are to adjust it so you can get into 1st and reverse easily and then the other gears should go in good too. When it isn't adjusted right you can't get first and reverse easily and trying the gears with car not running proves nothing.Car has to be running.
I currently have similar problem.I believe my cartech modified crappy gm master is not holding setting or is leaking. It seemed I could set it and it would be great but then drive it for awhile and same problem you have .Would have to put it into second at light when stopped and then up to 1st and reverse would go sometimes but had to mess with that too.

I just ordered the mcleod adjustable master.I suggest you do the same and as far as I know you are supposed to also use a mcleod flywheel not sure if its same as gm or not.

Where did you get this clutch.used what model is it..???
