10 bolt pinion seal question

I have a leaky pinion seal in my 10 bolt. I have the driveshaft out and was wondering if I can remove the nut on the pinion to remove the seal without messing up the backlash on the gear? What is the torque spec for that nut when I put it back on?

before removal,mark/scribe/paint lines on nut, washer, and yoke so that you can return it to its' exact position.Anything less will not return the pinion preload to what it was.

Also clean up the OD of the yoke surface that contacts the seal.By cleanup I'm refering to trying to bring the surface back to OEM specs.Too smooth/glossy and the seal will leak, too rough and the roughness will wear out the seal.
