RJS roll bar mount 5 point harness?

RJS 5 point quick relase harness is what I got part #BOB 30298-16-234. My ? is on the shoulder straps. Can I drill a whole in the roll bar to mount the belt and still be legal? I would drill and tap it plus put in a grade 8 bolt. If this wont be legal, should I just send it back and get the RCI "H" harness,or do something else?

Thanks,Sean

There's nothing in the rulebook that says you can't just drill a hole through the crossbar but the proper way to mount it is to weld on a mounting tab to the crossbar.

How would you tap it? The tubing is too thin for any threads strong enough to hold the belt. If you drilled a hole in the crossbar it would have to be through both sides and the bolt goes straight through.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't trust that set-up. Most roll bar tubing is only .134 thick, .083 if it's chromoly. Like Stephen said, that's not thick enough for the threads to be strong enough to hold the belt in the event of an accident.

I welded a piece of 1 1/2" square tubing to the crossbar then bolted it to the back of the seat and use it for seat bracing per the rulebook. Then I drilled a hole "completely" through the tubing and bolted the seat belt in place with a 3/8" Grade 8 bolt. This is a race car and the seat is an aftermarket poly racing seat. I'm not sure, but I don't think the seat bracing is required with OEM seats.

I might have to drill all the way threw but that will be next week I hope I survie this week.I also put the chrotch strap on the bar under the seat I dont know if that is leagel or not but I have a bar on the way for it.I also hope to run a little better than the time in sig. I pray for traction this week and I need to rember to put it in D after my burn outs.

If you want to tap the hole then make it thick enough for threads. Drill an oversized hole. Insert and weld a piece of pipe inside the hole. Tap the inside of the pipe and that will look more professional and stronger than just a bolt on some tubing.

OEM seats don't need to be braced but all aftermarket seats must have the back of the seat secured to the crossbar. I've seen very fancy rear supports fabricated. Even some have used an adjustable mount so that the seat can be slide back or forth and the rear brace can be repositioned.
