Restalling Vigilante 3200 for the strip - 3600 /4000?

Well I am approaching the 2 year deadline for my Vigilante free restall and I'm not sure how high to restall it. So, I'm enlisting the advice of my drag racing LT1 peers, and asking it here. Of course your going to need to know my setup and goals.

Mods:

Stock Bottom End
LE2 Heads
CC306 - 230/244 .544/.576 112 LSA
Moser 9" 4.11's Full Spool
4L80e Full Manual Valve Body
3200 RPM Single Disk Precision Industries Vigilante
Lots of suspension, some weight loss, bolt on's, 3" duals.

Goals: 11's on motor, 10's on the jug.

Information:

So general knowledge would suggest 4000 would be best for N/A and 3600 would be a good compromise for both and 3200 would be ideal for nitrous. I've heard lots of opinions from lots of people, some have been there, some havent. But I'm looking for people who have actually ran a similar setup with similar goals and power. Lloyd for instance suggested just that N/A 4000, N2O 3600, even though he ran mid 11's with a Yank 3000. I see folks like ABA383 with Vig 3600's running great times, but he's also running a smaller cam 222/230ish. T/A Lt1 ran low 11's with a 4000rpm Vig and sprayed into the 9's with a CC306, pretty sure he even had 3.42's. Nostang 96z says his 4000rpm Vig flashes to 5200 on the jug, probably a 200 shot.

My real world research on the 3200 shows that it is FAR to tight when running a CC306 cam only. The best 60's I cut with slicks in moderate weather was 2.0. The car would hook up, bog bad off the line, then finally kick in and take off down the strip. The 4.11's are making it tighter than usual, but adding the heads is going to bump the flash a little too, so I think those kinda offset each other. Here is my main concern, getting a 3600 so the car will perform well on the bottle, it not stalling high enough and the car sucking on the motor. Or getting a 4000, using nitrous eventually, and it blowing right through the converter.

Another consideration would be utilizing lockup to increase the efficiency down track while spraying. The 4L80e is running alot of line pressure, so the clutch should be able to hold. I have a single disk in my diesel truck holding over 1000 ft/lbs.

Also could hold off on the juice until it got out of the hole, but where's the fun in that

So let the H/C and nitrous LT1 guys speak up.

You are confusing me. You realize that if the converter is set up to stall at 3,600 on the juice it will be tighter without nitrous. OTOH, if it stalls at 3,600 NA, it will probably stall around 4,000 on nitrous. Anyway, I'd go for 4,000 NA if they can make it that loose and you can stand it (you don't say if you street drive it). I, for one, hate loose converters on street cars. That will give you your best track times, IMHO.

Sorry about that, I've been up for 36 hours and my post quality is getting worse with time. I do understand that a 3600 N/A will flash higher on the spray, lets say 4000 on N2O for argument sake. I do drive the car on the street, but rarely.

What I'm wondering is do I want a Vig "3600" that actually stalls to 4000 motor, seems they are typically underrated.

Thanks for the advice Rich.

Dustin: do you race it more NA or with nitrous?

I have ran many different converters and with my new setup, 383 LT1, more compression, solid roller etc guess what converter is going to be used? Vigilante 4k will probably be less than optimal for allmotor passes but it works great on n2o and it is a good compromise for a car that still sees a little street time as well. If my car were all out drag car I would go with an ATI 4500-5k n2o converter but since it will see some street action, I just got my Vig back from freshen up and they said it looked great after 4yrs of abuse. Lastly even with the 4k stall it doesn't feek too lose when you just want too cruise a little. Goodluck Later Clint

The Vigilante you have, did you have it setup for 4000 nitrous or 4000 on motor? Could I get the build number so I can ask Vicky about the internal design? Evidently whatever it is worked real well with the CC306 and nitrous

My converter was originally bought used from Shon herron as a used 4k converter and it worked great. The part number on the box when I recieved it back from Precision this time is: 219610 {PC48} on the box. Later

I might need the REF 1 number from the shipping label, but we'll see what I can do. Obviously if Shon was using it, it was built for motor when he was cracking those 11's on bolt on's. Thanks Clint, I wouldnt mind taking the CC306 where everyone says it cant go, again.

I believe this was the Th350 TC that was a 3500ish PI/Vig stall that was used in my 94 PPM car with 355/LT4 stuff, it did go 11.96 on motor and 11.17 on a 100shot, still needed some work though....

I had sent it too precision too have it loosened up when I first bought it 4 yrs or so ago, to 3800-4000rpm and my car went 11.20@120.8mph with that converter/Th350 and stock 3.42's in the 10bolt. Nobody believed the car ran those numbers with stock suspension, torquearm, springs, shocks etc.. I did have an airbag with some Hals up front when I started learning a little more about suspension tuning for our cars. I also ran 10.17@133mph on a 175shot before I swapped out the old 10bolt that is still together in my shop. LOL

Talked with Jack yesterday, got the Vigilante restalled to " 3800-4000 rpm ". I'll let everyone know what the actual flash stall is. Jack said on the bottle it would stall 300 RPM or so higher, although it's being setup primarily for N/A.

Thanks everyone for the help, appreciate the informative posts.

I'll be moving back home whenever Uncle Sam allows, until then I'll be doing my racing at 4500ft+ I'm probably going to trailer it over to Texas and hit some lower tracks over there when I can.

Piece of the Z, is that right... Handyman better start spraying and put you in your place How bout Cantonracer, I havent heard an update on his car in a while...he should be some stiff competition.
