New Best, need more tuning

Well I finally was able to get the car out to the track and see if it launches straight. It worked, it launched straight as an arrow. Seems the air bag that was left in there accidentilly was the culprit to the swaying to the left condition. The rear suspension was settling on the rear spring, but when the passenger's side bottomed out on the air bag, the left side still dropped more. This caused the car to sway to the left. The track was not at all prepped, I looked down the strip to find any hints of rubber ... nothing but white concrete. I lined her up as best as I could and asked her to take it easy on the launch. The officials also said not to go hard, it might be very dangerous, since we didn't know if the swaying was fixed at this point. The weather conditions were:

DA = 1766'
temp = 39 degrees
baro = 30.22 in/Hg
hum = 79%
alt = 2710'

1st Pass:
60' = 1.801
330 = 4.997
1/8 = 7.670
mph = 91.949
1000 = .000
1/4 = 11.995
mph = 112.207

After that I aired down the PSI to 14, strapped on the video camera (you guys will love this clip), and hooked up the HPTuners. She also left harder off the line:

2nd Pass:
60' = 1.904
330 = 5.043
1/8 = 7.637
mph = 94.632
1000 = .000
1/4 = 11.793
mph = 118.362

3rd Pass:
60' = 1.750
330 = 4.809
1/8 = 7.380
mph = 95.231
1000 = .000
1/4 = 11.523
mph = 118.462

4th Pass:
60' = 1.714 (went sidways, track was too slippery)
330 = 4.869
1/8 = 7.486
mph = 94.072
1000 = .000
1/4 = 11.672
mph = 117.260

After that we headed home. Tonight we might hit up Irwindale Dragway (1/8 mile) if the weather behaves. Here is where the traction is better and could net some low 7s.

Nice times! Looks like great conditions(weather wise), get some traction compound out there and low 11s should be attainable.

That's a pretty stout unit.

What kind of tuning do you plan to perform?

What do you think is left in it?

It weighs 3050?

Does it have a transbrake?

Yeah, with traction it should launch harder. I think it will run an 11 flat up there.

Thanks! I am working with Ken from HPTuners and we are going with a Speed Density tune. I think it has about 20-35 more HP left in it, or 10.80s up there. Yup, 3050 is what the scales at LACR said, but I was told they were not accurate that day ... it could be lower. The transmission is a B&M TH400 full manual valvebody with a transbrake.

Here are our results from a lower elevation 1/8 mile track:

As you all know, we went out to Irwindale Dragway last night. It was the first street legal drags for the year and it looked like a typical Irwindale night, a lot of people. We unloaded the Z28, teched it in, and headed for the stagging lanes. Air pressure in the tires was 12 PSI cold. She does a long burnout on her first pass and launches off of the transbrake at 4600. WHEELS UP! I'll post the video later tonight, that was a bad *** run! Here is how it went.

60' = 1.549
33' = 4.608
1/8 = 7.156
MPH = 96.38

On the second pass, I set the HAL's two settings firmer ... I believe they were initially at 2 (lower setting). But the track had some wet spots, so bad the car after her just launched and got out of it for the rest of the pass. Here is how her second pass went.

60' = 1.831
33' = 4.904
1/8 = 7.445
MPH = 96.69

She quickly lined up for one final pass, she hadn't ate since the morning and was getting ready to pass out after this run.

60' = 1.585
330' = 4.534
1/8 = 7.020
MPH = 98.38

This is still untuned and I know it will go 6.7s at 103-105 MPH. I would love to get some more wheels up launches, but she would rather have it go forward than up. This is about an 11 flat at 122. I am very proud of her!

I thought it would have a transbrake, it turns Pro Stock type ET efficiencies.

That's what I was looking for the 1.5x sixty footers. They were missing from this posts runs.

Based on what you're already doing I calculate an 11.17 @ 122.00. Now, if you can pick up 25-30 more hp you'll be looking 10.9x's right in the face.

How will speed density do that? No MAF?

3050 at 122 = 480 fwhp.

Wheels up may not necessarily slow the car down (wasted energy they say) or maybe she just doesn't like it. It does excite people and is a great way to attract attention (sponsors).

Good point Andy, on the wheels up. She just wants to get more seat time and then we will impress the crowds/sponsors. Oh and yes, with Speed Density tuning you eliminate the MAF sensor and the possible restriction (typically if you are over 600rwhp). I figure might as well tune it in SD mode now so we have less headaches when we go for more power.

Here are three of her videos as promised, hope you all enjoy them.

Looking out the back as she launches, at LACR
